If your furnace is blowing cold air (or just lukewarm), you’re not alone. Most cases come down to settings, airflow, ignition, or safety controls doing their job. Use this quick guide to try safe fixes first—then see when it’s time to call a pro.
Thermostat: Mode on Heat, Fan = Auto, setpoint at least 3–5°F above room temp.
Filter: If it’s dirty or gray, replace it. Restricted airflow can cause the furnace to overheat and turn off the flame. You will feel cool air while the blower keeps running to protect the system.
Vents & returns: Open supply vents and clear return grills.
Power & switches: Furnace switch ON, breaker ON, door panel fully closed (the safety switch must be pressed).
Gas (for gas furnaces): Gas valve inline with the pipe (open), no strong gas smell. If you smell gas—leave the home and call the gas company/emergency services.
Condensate drain (high-efficiency models): If the drain is clogged, the furnace won’t fire. Look for a full/blocked drain line or pan.
If it still blows cool, move to the common causes below.
Fan = On runs the blower nonstop—even when the burners are off—so air feels cool between heat cycles.
Fix: Set Fan = Auto so it runs only during heating.
A clogged filter or blocked returns cause overheating. The high-limit switch turns burners off for safety, but the blower keeps running to cool the furnace—feels like cold air.
Fix: New filter; open vents; keep furniture away from returns.
If burners light but shut down quickly, a dirty flame sensor or overheating (limit switch trip) is likely.
Fix: Replace filter; if cycling continues, the sensor/limit/airflow needs professional service.
Hot surface igniter cracked/weak, spark not firing, or pilot out (older systems) will stop heat.
Fix: This is a pro task—igniter testing/replacement and safe relight procedures.
Closed valve, low pressure, or a failing gas valve means no flame.
Fix: Confirm valve is open; leave gas diagnostics to a pro.
A blocked intake/exhaust, weak inducer fan, or faulty pressure switch prevents ignition.
Fix: Clear snow/debris from PVC intake/exhaust outdoors. Further testing is for a technician.
Blower runs but burners never fire because the control can’t command heat.
Fix: Professional diagnosis of board, relays, and low-voltage signals.
Warm air is diluted by unconditioned air; you feel cool at the registers.
Fix: Seal/insulate ducts; balance airflow.
Heat pump note: If you have a dual-fuel system or a heat pump with a furnace, you may notice “blowing cool” symptoms. These can be caused by heat pump or defrost problems. We can check both sides of the system.
Set Heat + Fan Auto, raise setpoint 3–5°F.
Replace the filter and wait a full cycle.
Open all supply vents and clear returns.
Check outdoor intake/exhaust (condensing furnaces) for blockages.
Thermostat batteries: replace if the screen is dim/erratic.
If the blower still runs but the air stays cool—or the flame won’t stay on—schedule a diagnostic.
Burners won’t ignite or ignite then shut off repeatedly.
Error/blinking codes on the furnace board.
High-efficiency unit with water in the drain or repeated pressure-switch faults.
Electrical issues (tripping breaker, burnt smell from furnace).
Any gas smell or signs of soot/flame rollout—leave the home and call for help first.
A licensed tech will check igniter resistance, clean/replace the flame sensor, read error codes, test gas pressure, perform combustion analysis, verify static pressure/airflow, and clear the condensate system.
Filter: replace every 1–3 months in season.
Annual tune-up (fall): clean burners, verify ignition, test limits/sensors, clear condensate, check venting.
Keep intake/exhaust clear outside; don’t store items against the furnace.
Leave at least a few vents open per room for healthy airflow.
